Shrieking Gull
Love it or hate it 70's classic treble boost
The Shrieking Gull boost rack effect module compares to the EHX Screaming Bird treble booster. Probably too extreme for common use by most players, but if you need to cut diamonds or blow out some windows, this effect may help you get it done.
Description
The Shrieking Gull is based on the EHX Screaming Bird treble booster. If you want to cut through, really cut through, the Shrieking Gull can get it done. It takes some time to fit it into your rig to get good tones out of it. Many find it piercingly bright to the point of being unusable. It certainly can be exactly that. It has enough gain to push an amp into overdrive, which can also result in very bright crunch tone. If you want bright, it is easy to achieve. But there is another way to use it that may be better. Use it to add some treble and drive to a signal that is already in overdrive. Kick it on in front of an overdriven tube amp or in front of other drive pedals to add some sparkle and a bit of additional gain. It can be a bit tricky to dial in but can result in some great lead/solo tones that cut through in a good way, without ice-picking your eardrums.
Configurations
- Shrieking Gull - Compares to EHX Screaming Bird treble boost.
Options
- Custom Transistor - Comes standard with a 2N5089 high-gain, low noise modern transistor. These are great transistors used in several GT effects, but you can choose another. The original circuit used a 2N5133 transistor, now very difficult to find. At the time, the 2N5133 wasn't a special transistor, more likely it was simply available at low cost. We sometimes have them available, but we have to charge more for them. Not really worth it in this circuit.
- Components - We use metal film resistors and a selection of capacitors that provide good tone and low noise
